"On Tuesday evening my wife lost her long battle against cancer …

"Laura is the strongest, bravest, most loving person I have ever met. Even through everything she was going through, she continued to smile, never letting anything get in the way of having a good time and making a lifetime of memories. We have cried, laughed and danced our way through some tough times.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported me and both families through this incredibly difficult time. I'm truly fortunate to have the most amazing family and friends."

Laura lost her brave battle only three months after the couple had been married.

Vickers was with the Millers for two and a half seasons and shared the first-team jersey with Viktor Johansson as the club were promoted from League One in the 2021/22 campaign. He left AESSEAL New York Stadium in the summer to join Derby County.

Addressing his wife directly in his farewell post, he wrote: "I will cherish every moment we spent together, from the first time we met to the moment you peacefully passed. I know that you will be looking down on me and continuing to inspire me every day. I love you always and forever."

The Millers said in a statement on their website: "Everyone at Rotherham United would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to Josh and all of his family and friends following the deeply-saddening news of the passing of his wife, Laura."

Derby players held up a shirt bearing Vickers' name after their match at Carlisle United yesterday.
