A FORMER Rotherham United goalkeeper said he had fallen “out of love with the game” after his water bottle was reportedly switched with one full of urine.

Tony Thompson, with the Millers from 2012 to 2015, was targeted by a fan who grabbed the keeper’s bottle from the goal net and replaced it with a digusting substitute.

Thompson was playing for Warrington FC in a 1-0 defeat against Guiseley AFC in the FA Vase cup on Saturday when the prank took place.

In the 61th minute, Thompson was sent off for squirting the bottle of urine at what is believed to be the fan in question.

The prank was caught on camera in a video shared on social media.

Warrington FC said it would be undertaking an investigation alongside Cheshire Police regarding the incident.

Thompson, who did not actually make an appearance for Rotherham United, said he was left frustrated and angered by what had happened during the game.

“Today I fell out of love with the game,” he said.

“I’ve been called many names but for someone to p*** in my bottle, for me to drink it and then to be told I wasn’t allowed to react because I’m a player is outrageous.

“That person has put me and my family’s health at risk and left me sick.”

Warrington FC said it would support Mr Thompson following the incident.

“It goes without saying that the incident is deplorable and has no place in non-league football, football or society in general,” the club added.

“We have also been contacted by Cheshire Police regarding the incident.

“We will await the referee’s report and FA charge before deciding what action to take regarding the red card.

“Our priority is ensuring that Tony is given the support he needs given the attention that the story is receiving, and we know he is thankful for the messages of support he has received, particularly from other goalkeepers.”

Guiseley AFC confirmed the fan in question would receive a ban but would wait until the police investigation was completed before extending it further.

“We have submitted all evidence we have to West Yorkshire Police and asked that they pass this onto their colleagues at Cheshire Police who have been in contact with Warrington Town, so they can continue their investigations into the contents of the bottle and the events that followed,” the club said.

“Once we receive the match footage from Warrington Town we will continue in our efforts to identify the individual’s accomplices and take necessary action against these.

“Guiseley AFC Supporters’ Club have also banned this individual from travelling on their match day coaches.
