Football scholarship open day

TEENAGERS are invited to a football scholarship open day this weekend to learn how they can play the game they love while continuing their education – possibly in America.

Dinnington High School's scholarship, for 16-19 year olds, runs for two years and allows students to gain either BTEC or A-level qualifications as well as devoting part of the timetable to developing their footballing ability with numerous coaching and teaching staff at the PE facility there.

Saturday's event at Dinnington, which runs from 2pm to 6pm, also includes a presentation from Chris Cousins of Sports Recruiting USA about similar scholarships in the USA.

There will be an opportunity to get on its books and ask questions. Those attending will then spend the rest of the afternoon playing matches which scouts and staff will watch and record.

Players need to take appropriate kit, trainers and boots.

The football programme includes four hours a week of training as well as weekly matches. Students have the opportunity to gain coaching qualifications as well as working in local primary schools with younger students.

In addition, Dinnington School has teamed up with a local gym which will provide individual training plans and allow access to their facilities on a scheduled basis.
