Evans salutes players

STEVE Evans saluted his Rotherham United players for beating Millwall and also voiced regret over the crowd trouble that marred the fixture.

Visiting supporters clashed with stewards and police in the closing stages at the AESSEAL New York Stadium after their team went 2-1 behind.

That’s how it stayed, handing the Millers a vital win over their Championship relegation rivals, but trouble also spilled out into the surrounding area afterwards involving some of the 1,300 plus Millwall fans who made the trip north.

Evans said after the game: “I don’t know what has gone on, so I’m speaking blind on this, but if it is untoward then the authorities will deal with that appropriately. There’s no excuse for it in football.”

Trailing at half time to a Martyn Woolford strike, Rotherham hit back to win with goals from Danny Ward and Kari Arnason, the Icelandic international’s strike coming five minutes from time.

Evans added: “It would have been a travesty if we hadn’t beat them because we laid siege to their goal in the second half. We were the team that played the football and passed it and tried to get crosses in. It was a good win and we showed a lot of character.”

The victory lifted the Millers six points above the relegation zone going into Tuesday’s home clash with Cardiff.
