Drinkhall aims for national glory

TABLE tennis star Paul Drinkhall can make a massive stride towards Olympic selection this weekend

Drinkhall, who lives in Clifton, is one of a clutch of players chasing success in the three-day English National Championships at Ponds Forge.

The event, supported by the city council's Major Events Unit, and the result of a long term relationship between the sport and the city which sees many of the leading GB players use the English Institute of Sport facilities in Sheffield, could prove to be a crucial tournament for the Olympic hopefuls as the final decision for Team GB Olympic selection beckons.

In the men's singles Rotherham-based Drinkhall and rival Andrew Baggaley are separated by a lick of paint in the latest World Rankings whilst Derbyshire youngster Liam Pitchford is leaving top world players in his wake.
