Cricketers in name change

ONE of Rotherham cricket’s oldest names is to disappear - in an attempt to secure the club’s future.

Whiston Methodists was formed back in 1926, becoming the village’s second club, but now officials have decided to ditch their links with the church.

The hope is that by shortening the name to a simple Whiston CC, they will attract new players and fresh backers for the South Yorkshire Alliance side.

Said Vice Chairman Liam Alcock: “We have had a few issues at the club and that’s why we took the decision to drop the Meths part of our name.

“We haven’t had anything to do with the church for half a century and thought that by making the change if would prove beneficial."
