Rotherham teens win St John Ambulance competition

YOUNG first aiders showed off their life-saving skills to win a St John Ambulance competition.

Teenagers from the charity’s Rotherham No1 and Enzor cadet unit beat others from across South Yorkshire by showing how to respond to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, hip injury and angina.

The unit’s senior team took first prize, while its junior team, with ages ranging from ten to 16, finished second.

The Rotherham first aiders will now go through to the next round of the contest on May 22 at Rotherham’s Lifestyle Centre to find a team to represent St John Ambulance’s North East region in a national contest.

Rotherham youth leader Debby Clarkson said the competition success was a good result as several youngsters had only recently joined the unit.

She said: “We are very proud of the achievement. The work these young people have put in and their willingness to practise deserved a win.”
