Police were doing their job

TO Darren Johnson and Phil Spittlehouse: re the policing at the Rotherham United v Sheffield Wednesday .

I took my 10 year old son to the game as Sheffield Wednesday fans and we were seated in the away end, my dad and my sons dad were seated in the family stand as they are Rotherham fans.

We went to the game together but after the game we agreed to meet at the corner of the council buildings, my son and me left the ground to the constant verbal abuse from the Rotherham fans separated from us, and when we reached the end of New York way I asked a police officer if we could go and meet my father and my sons’ dad. We were politely refused due to safety reasons.

I tried to phone them but because the network was busy I couldn’t contact them so we walked the long way round to the bus station where we finally met up with them. Rotherham fans are complaining they couldn’t get back to their cars for 20 minutes. Myself and my son were separated from family but I believe the police acted on safety first separating both sets of fans and as it was there was minimal trouble and minimal arrests.

I have had some bad experiences with police in the past but South Yorkshire police were only doing their job, and yes both sets of fans were put out not just Rotherham fans.
