Operation is vital

IN your article on Crohns Disease sufferer Jade Terry (Advertiser May 29), you quote her as saying the colonoscopy she underwent was “the most degrading, humiliating, painful thing”.

I had this procedure done at Rotherham Hospital four years ago. Due to my circumstances I was unable to have the normal sedation given, but was given gas and air to use myself when needed. Despite having a long and tortuous bowel I only felt minor discomfort, no pain.

The staff were patient, kind and considerate and did everything possible to put me at ease. No way did I feel humiliated or degraded.

A colonoscopy is a vital tool used in the diagnosis of bowel disorders. In my experience it is nothing to fear, and I hope that Jade’s comments have not put off anybody who has been offered a colonoscopy by their GP or consultant.
