LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Ridiculous price of school uniforms with logos

I WAS interested to read in the Advertiser and other media sources about the concern some families are having over the price of school uniforms.

I think the whole issue of uniforms should be looked into and changes made at a time when we all face a massive rise in the cost of living.

I do believe children should go to school looking clean and smart but I also think this can be achieved without the need to have every bit of clothing emblazoned with the school’s logo.

So let’s look at the school blazer and badge.

These were popular in the 50s and 60s but they are now old hat and should be replaced by a standard colour top, something like a sweat shirt, which would also take away the cost of a shirt and tie.

Trousers — my grandson goes to a school where even the trousers have to have a school logo on them and they cost, depending on size, up to £20.

The same grey trousers from one of the town’s local clothes stores can be bought for around £9, again depending on size.

The cost of a washable top, grey trousers, socks etc is about £20.

I have just bought my grandson a new blazer for £30, trousers for £18, and two white shirts and a school tie for £14 and I have to buy them from one supplier that the school nominates and the only one that carries my grandson’s school logo.

This is not taking into account the cost of school sports clothing that also carries the logo.

I also believe the children would appreciate the change from something that is formal and years out of date to something that is casual and a little more up to date and hopefully more affordable for the parents.
