LETTER: Nimbys shouldn't stop Herringthorpe Playing Fields plan

Sir—With reference to the recent letters regarding the rugby club's attempts to provide facilities on the playing fields, I feel that some of the opposition smacks of nimbyism

I remember as a child and young adult that the playing fields were packed with teams playing sport; football and rugby in the winter and cricket on summer evenings and weekend .

The old pavilion was maintained and used. All that has gone into decline. Apart from Sunday football there seems to be little organized sport played. The pavilion was vandalised and eventually demolished.

The proposals to create secure surroundings for sport are to be lauded and encouraged. The facilities have to be secure especially if they are to have floodlighting. (How long would the wiring stay in situ?).

A correspondent stated that the area was for walking dogs. It is not acceptable to have youngsters playing in areas which may have been fouled by dogs or play rugby in an area which may be contaminated with broken glass; another reason for securing the site.

The proposal is within the spirit of why the area was first given as an area for sport and recreation. The world we live in demands modern facilities and security.

Rotherham Rugby Club is one of the best ambassadors for sport in the area and should be applauded for its proposals which I completely support.
