Sir -- Rotherham’s council and police should be commended. Most of the residents of Rockingham way are enjoying a quiet and pleasant retirement, that is until the silence is broken by careless hoodlums hurling anything from fruits and berries, to mud bombs and stones at the houses of the elderly, disabled, retired and/or weak.

The three primarily responsible are a cocky 14-16yr old girl and two boys. Growing tired of this ad-hoc harassment I contacted the council online.

The next day they called and told me they were passing the report onto the police. I was then contacted by Elizabeth Taylor of the police's north Safer Neighbourhood Team saying she was going to move her patrols to pass through the area routinely and assured me that if the problem persisted, that she was only a phone call or email away.

She even offered to have the area patrolled every day all week to try and catch them in the act.

I was expecting my concern to be brushed off and ignored as trivial. I was very impressed by the speed at which my report was acted upon and by the diligence and response of the South Yorkshire police.

Keep up the good work.

Ashley Gaynor, Rockingham Way, Rockingham.
