In defence of Rotherham Market

IN response to David Trickett’s letter (Advertiser, January 4) regarding a ‘Rotten deal at Rotherham Market’. I feel aggrieved how Mr Trickett has gone about this unfortunate shopping experience.

Whilst I can understand Mr Trickett’s frustration and annoyance with the potatoes he received, may I suggest you go back to the stall concerned and I am sure, be it ourselves or one of my fellow traders, that they will deal with the problem in a prompt and proper manner.

The unprecedented weather experienced in Britain this summer was detrimental to all crops, none more so than potatoes, with tight supplies.

Potatoes with small defects, growth cracks and scab flecking are all making it onto retailers’ shelves, supermarkets included!

Although not the best looking in terms of appearance, they are not absolute rubbish as quoted by Mr Trickett.

As regard to choice, we stock over 100 different lines of fresh produce on a daily basis. My family have been trading on Rotherham Market and selling quality produce for over 70 years and are a fourth generation business, serving thousands of loyal and satisfied customers every week in Rotherham and Doncaster markets.

In a recent secret shoppers’ survey in Rotherham Market (November 2012), we received 99 out of 100 for quality and customer service. We also received the title of Doncaster Shopkeeper of the Year 2010.

I certainly would not want to take away an individual’s rights to complain about unsatisfactory goods purchased, all I would ask is that my business and Rotherham Market in general is treated the same way as any other retail outlet. In that sense, I hope Mr Trickett would have taken the time and trouble to write a similar letter if he was dissatisfied with goods purchased from one of the major supermarkets.
