Footbridge letting us down

Sir--The new Rotherham football stadium is coming on leaps and bounds now and is something to be proud of.

It will attract many visiting fans which is all good for Rotherham. I only hope these fans don't take the "scenic" route across the River Don using the Tesco footbridge.

Who is responsible for keeping this footbridge clean? Tesco themselves or Rotherham Borough Council?

It is absolutely filthy with leftover food cartons, graffiti, fag ends, vomit and empty beer cans. The windows should afford a panoramic view of the river - that is if we could only see out of them!

At one time we could pause and take in the waterfall, the occasional glimpse of wildlife; a crane balancing on one leg, chancing a fish or two; ducks with their young and the odd fisherman.

Its probably all still happening out there but we just can't see it anymore. Now we just concentrate on getting across as quickly as possible training the eye on the other end and trying not to look down or breathe in until you reach the other side, for fear of contamination.

What on earth will visitors (many probably their first time to Rotherham) think of this "gateway" to the New York Stadium?

We need to address this, not only for visitors to Rotherham but also for the dignity and health of Rotherham townsfolk.
