Ex-Chief Constable the wrong man for commissioner's job

Sir-- I am disgusted that The Labour Party has shortlisted ex-Chief Constable Med Hughes for a job as an elected police and crime commissioner.

It beggars belief that the Labour Party is even considering the nomination of ex-Chief Constable Med Hughes.

Mr Hughes’s record hardly supports Labour's values of integrity, fairness and responsibility and do we really want police watching the police?

He only joined the party a few days before nominations were opened, demonstrating breathtaking opportunism.

He publicly criticised Labour for stopping executive cars for the most senior officers as part of a cost-saving exercise showing he’s out of touch with ordinary people.

He was banned from driving only seven years ago for speeding illustrating irresponsible behaviour.

It’s also unethical for an ex-Chief Constable to run for commissioner in the area he so recently commanded.

This will make the new Chief Constable’s job impossible. Furthermore, Mr Hughes should earn the right to stand as a Labour candidate like everyone else in the party has had to do.

Working for the party, campaigning for the party and earning the respect of the party.

If the Labour Party nationally really wants to get back into power they should get back in touch with their grass roots supporters rather than taking their votes for granted with this cynical attempt to put forward someone who doesn’t even live in South Yorkshire.
