YUK! Dad's disgust at MacDonald's nail burger

A FAST food treat turned into a Happy Meal horror when the dad of a three-year-old boy plucked a large fingernail from his son’s burger.

James Riley (25) was horrified when he took the top of the bread bun off his son’s beef burger to remove his unwanted gherkin slices to reveal the grisly article during a visit to McDonald’s on Bridgegate.

Staff were alerted to the presence of the intrusive talon in young Reece’s Happy Meal at lunchtime on Monday and promised that the incident would be investigated, before handing over vouchers for two complimentary Big Mac meals.

But Mr Riley said that that was small compensation for an incident he believed was a deliberate prank, which could have had serious consequences.

He said: “I think someone has put that in there deliberately. How else could a fingernail end up on a burger like that?

“The only reason I found it was because Reece doesn’t like gherkins and I was going to take them off his burger for him.

“When I took the top off the burger I saw it straight away. It was a pretty big fingernail.

“If I hadn’t found it he could have choked on it or anything.”

Mr Riley said that staff in the McDonald’s outlet seemed shocked when they saw what he had found, but added: “I wish I hadn’t handed the burger back. I want to be sure that this will be investigated. It’s just not on.”

A McDonald’s spokesman this week apologised for the incident, stating: “We are very sorry if our usual high standards were not met and, as was assured to the customer, the restaurant manager is looking into this incident.

“We adhere to the very highest standard of cleanliness and hygiene and the health and safety of our customers is our top priority.”

Mr Riley, of St Stephen’s Road, Rotherham, this week blasted the fast food giant’s response, raging: “I think it’s disgusting.

“This whole thing has made me sick to the pit of my stomach.

“My lad loved McDonald’s, lots of children do, but if this can happen to a Happy Meal we’ll never be going back again.”
