Yorkshire's biggest water power plant to be launched in Rotherham

A NEW water power plant billed as the biggest ever built in Yorkshire will be officially opened in Rotherham next week.

Mr John Healey will do the honours at the Thrybergh Hydropower project on the River Don next Friday.

The Thrybergh project is the largest “low-head” hydropower plant that has been commissioned in the UK since 2012 and will generate renewable energy round the clock for up to 11 months a year.

Fish and eel passages have been built as part of the scheme to open up another stretch of the River Don and are a part of a long-term plan to get salmon back up to Sheffield.

The Thrybergh project is being led by Barn Energy and Yorkshire Hydropower.
