Wrap up warm for New Year's Eve

PEOPLE heading out to celebrate the New Year may need to dig out their hat and scarf with temperatures expected to dip below freezing tonight.

The Met Office has forecast a dry but cold New Year's Eve with temperatures as low as -2°C.

Its chief forecaster said there will be showers this afternoon, with the odd rumble of thunder possible, before they fizzle out this evening.

The weather is expected to be dry at midnight with temperatures around 0°C.

A widespread frost is also expected on New Year's Day morning.
