World record for Rotherham cyclist

MAD-keen cyclist Richard Nutt pedalled thousands of miles a day to set a new world record for the longest distance covered on two wheels in one week — and said he enjoyed every second.

The Rotherham rider clocked up an incredible 2,830km (1,758 miles) over a seven-day period to surpass the previous best by five kilometres.

He admitted: “While I enjoyed every second of this challenge and I’m delighted to have broken the record, it has been an extreme test of endurance.”

Richard, a member of Dinnington Racing Club, lives and works in Rotherham, undertook the challenge while raising money for his chosen charities, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, Headway Brain Injury Association and CRY Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Despite being hampered by strong winds and a slight medical scare during the early stages of his ride, he managed to achieve the record with 30 minutes to spare.

He was joined on his ride, which passed through Maltby, Retford, Barnby Moor and Newark and finished on June 7, by cyclists from other clubs such as Tickhill Velo, Worksop Wheelers and Out of the Saddle Cycling Club and supporters from his main sponsor main sponsor YESSS Electrical.

Richard added: “I’m so thankful to my sponsors for helping me to achieve this goal, and especially to cyclists from YESSS Electrical for turning out to ride alongside me.

“I’m also grateful to everyone that has supported my chosen charities during my whirlwind week.”

Andy Singleton, general manager at YESSS Electrical, said: “We never doubted Richard's abilities.

“It’s been a privilege to support him in his training and during the main event, and we can’t wait to see what he gets up to next.”
