Victory in student road safety campaign

A STUDENT-led campaign to improve road safety has finally seen permanent signs put up at the school gates.

The flashing posts will warn drivers to obey a new 20mph speed limit on Moor Lane North at drop-off and pick-up times.

Pupils at Ravenfield Primary School gathered around 300 signatures on a petition to Rotherham Borough Council — backed by teachers, governors and Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey.

Rotherham Council’s cabinet approved the plan in December and temporary signs were put up.

The new signs show flashing amber lights half an hour before and after the beginning and end of school.

Mr Healey added: “I’m delighted that the signs indicating the lower speed limit are now in place.

“Together with the school and people in Ravenfield who signed my petition I was able to show there was strong local concern and support for this.

“If the new speed limit is a success, I’d like to see similar schemes put in place outside other schools in Rotherham.

“I’d like people to let me know if they think speed is a particular problem outside their local school.”

Mr Healey joined the campaign last October, when concerned parents approached him for help.
