Van driver abandons trailer after it disintegrates on M1

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after parts of a crumbling trailer smashed into a car travelling along the M1 motorway—leaving it with serious damage.

The white Volkswagen Golf travelling on the northbound carriageway near the Woodall Services collided with a wheel and hub that had fallen off a small box-type trailer being towed by a van travelling in the opposite direction at around 3pm on Sunday.

A police spokesman explained: “The near side wheel and hub of the trailer came off, bounced across the central reservation and hit the front of the white VW Golf, causing extensive damage.

“The second vehicle, possibly a van with amber lights on the roof, pulled onto the hard shoulder, the driver detached the trailer from the vehicle and drove off, abandoning the trailer on the hard shoulder.”

The trailer is described as white with blue tarpaulin top with black tape and could be home made.

The 65-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen hatchback was from Nottinghamshire and was not injured in the incident.

Officers would like to trace the driver of the second vehicle and are eager to speak to witnesses of the collision.
