Transform lives with your blood: Join the NHS blood donation event in Rotherham

POTENTIAL blood donors are being encouraged to attend an event in Rotherham and help “transform people’s lives”.

The NHS Blood Donation Service will be hosting a What’s Your Blood Type? event open to those eligible and considering donating blood at Riverside House Café on Main Street on Wednesday, May 31.

NHS staff will complete a finger-prick blood test to find out blood types and anyone wanting to become a donor can be signed up to attend a nearby blood donation venue, as donations cannot be taken on-site.

Donors can then download the Give Blood app on their mobile phone to track the journey of their donation and find out which hospital received their generous gift.

A spokesperson for the NHS Blood Donation Service said: “We would like to encourage people from ethnic minority backgrounds to attend this event as these are often the groups where blood donation is most needed.

“This is primarily, because the Ro blood type (a variation of the Rh positive blood type) is ten times more common in Black African or Black Caribbean ethnic backgrounds and their blood can be used to help people with sickle cell disease and thalassemia.”

They added: “It is vital that there is a wide range of blood donors from a variety of backgrounds to ensure hospitals have a sufficient supply of all blood types.”

The event will run from 10.30am to 2pm.

Before attending the event, potential donors can check they are eligible online via www.tinyurl.com/DonorCheck.
