School run safety plea to Rotherham mums and dads

SCHOOL-run parents are being urged to curb bad habits that could be making the roads more dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.

Police officers and PCSOs are issuing advice and training in schools as part of a new campaign being operated by the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership.

The move aims to ease congestion at the school gates and improve safety.

An emphasis on encouraging parents to walk to school with their children in the new school year and advice on how motorists can park more safely outside the school gates are central to their message.

Supt Eddie Murphy said: “Drivers should pay particular attention when driving outside schools and be alert for pedestrians crossing the road between parked cars.

“Always drive within the speed limit and to suit the road conditions.

“Let’s make sure that our children can get to school in safety.

“Remember that a vehicle can be a deadly weapon and the consequences of a traffic collision can be devastating for everyone involved.”

The SYSRP issued the following advice for motorists and pedestrians to help improve safety on the roads around schools:

Never park on zig zags. They provide a clear space for pedestrians, where they can see traffic and traffic can see them.

Avoid parking on pavements. This can force pedestrians into the road.

Always stop for school crossing patrols. They are working to make the roads safer for pedestrians.

Always choose a safer place to cross, even if it means walking slightly further.

Be bright, be seen. Wear light coloured clothing and reflective items to make your child more visible to drivers and other road users.

Always stop at the kerb and do not be tempted to push a buggy into the road in front of you.
