Rotherham parking plea rejected

ROTHERHAM Borough Council has turned down pleas for more parking places from motorists who live in the town centre.

Residents say they have little or no access to spaces, and fear their problem will get worse as more housing is built.

But Monday’s meeting of the newly-formed Cabinet member for town centres saw the request for a dedicated residents’ parking scheme was dismissed.

Council engineer Matthew Lowe said: “The principle behind town centre living is that by living close to shops, amenities and frequent public transport the need to travel by car is reduced. The majority of apartments within the town centre are advertised with no associated car parking.

“Residents’ parking schemes are implemented within mainly residential areas to control commuter and shopper parking.

“The town centre is predominantly a shopping/business area and parking controls already exist to regulate parking within this area.”
