Road safety roadshow visits Parkgate

ROAD safety officers will be out and about next week warning people about the danger of distractions as the wheel.

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is holding roadshows at Morrison’s in Parkgate from 1pm on Tuesday, November 19, as part of National Road Safety Week, which is run by road safety charity Brake.

This year’s theme is “Tune in to road safety”, which aims to raise awareness of distractions for drivers and other road users.

Ken Wheat, SYSRP manager, said: “In South Yorkshire last year there were 29 people killed and 450 seriously injured on our roads.

“We must remember that every collision can have a tragic and lasting impact on friends, families and loved ones.

“Whether you’re a driver, a motorcyclist, pedal cyclist or pedestrian you must remain aware and take responsibility for your actions on the road.

“We all like to listen to music, chat with our friends and use our mobile phones when out and about.

“However, if you are cycling, driving or crossing the road these can be a distraction.

“We will be appealing to drivers to turn off their phones and never multi-task at the wheel.

“We shall also be reminding pedestrians and cyclists how music players and mobile phones can be a distraction when negotiating the road.”

There will be members of the police, fire service and ambulance service at the supermarket to answer questions.
