A meeting has been organised at the neighbouring Station pub at 7pm on Thursday, February 7, to gauge interest among esidents and rail users in forming a “friends” group to adopt Swinton Station.

Swinton councillor Ken Wyatt said: “Many stations all over the country have friends groups who recognise the value of helping to create a pleasant, interesting environment for passengers and visitors.

“Swinton is very well served with rail services and is the sixth busiest station in South Yorkshire.

“The station itself, however, is a rather soulless place.”

Northern Rail and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive are both expected to send representatives to the open meeting.

Ideas already being considered include planters for the platforms, improving natural habitats, heritage pictures in the waiting area, a programme of guided walks from the station and a book exchange.
