Time to hop and shop in Rotherham

JUMP and jive into a town centre timewarp this weekend, as Rotherham steps back into the 1940s in style.

The Right Royal Vintage Hop swings into town on Saturday, with singers and musicians putting on the Ritz to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The Darling Dollies will recall the likes of the Andrews sisters in All Saints Square, while the George Formby Experience and Elvis Once More revive their famous namesakes.

And dance fans can even learn to move like a retro rocker, with swing dance classes throughout the day.

Lindy hopper Krissy Moore and Advertiser man Dave Doyle will take jitterbuggers through classic steps and routines from the 1930s and 1940s.

Classes will happen at the Heart of Steel and again at the Right Royal Vintage Hop afternoon afterparty, happening at The Trades.

Guests are also invited to dine at an Effingham Street outdoor party, featuring picnic tables and decorations.

A vintage market on Effingham Street and Howard Street will offer a quirky and eclectic mix of wares — from household goods and jewellery to clothing and bespoke hats.

More than 40 vintage vehicles — including cars, bikes and vans — will be parked on Church Street by their retro-loving owners.

Meanwhile the Button Tin, in the Imperial Building, will offer sewing workshops from 11.30am until 3pm for those wishing to make vintage accessories.

For children, close-up magician Barrington Powell and Ginger Beard Circus’ Suitcase Show will be on hand to entertain.

Vintage dress is strongly encouraged, with Tesco hampers up for grabs by the two best dressed.

Rock ’n’ roll trio The Mee Kats will rock the Trades from 4pm, alongside The Slingshots and the Sweet Tones.

Cllr Denise Lelliott, cabinet member for the local economy, said: “What a great mix of vintage entertainment for the whole family.

“Visitors to the town centre are in for a real treat with this wonderful event, a feast for their eyes and ears and so much fun too.

“I really hope people embrace the Vintage Hop as they have done in previous years and have a fantastic day out.”

One special VIP guest will become royalty for a day, after winning a Rotherham Council competition.

Like the Queen, Betty Hayter (89) of Kimberworth Park will turn 90 later this year.

She will be chauffeured on Saturday in a classic Rolls Royce and treated to afternoon tea at Scarlett’s Coffee Bar and Deli, on Douglas Street.
