Time running out for comments on Herringthorpe rugby plans

TWO opposing petitions have been handed to councillors about the plans for rugby on Herringthorpe playing fields.

Rotherham Rugby Club has proposed a 21-year lease for three pitches after gaining permission for ten floodlights on appeal.

The first petition — with 28 signatures — urges Rotherham Borough Council to refuse the land lease. It adds that the fields should be open to all and not set aside only for rugby.

A second submission — containing 187 names — supports the deal enabling the club to develop facilities to improve the amateur game in Rotherham.

The closing date for comments about the proposal is tomorrow. A council spokesman said: “A report will be taken to Cabinet in April for a decision on the lease agreement.”
