Technology teacher Simon Storer’s department lead the production of the torch.

“We looked at what we could do to suggest the area that we’re in, with the history of steel and metalwork.”

The schools relay will begin on April 17 and visit every school in the authority before being used to mark open Rotherham Children’s Festival at Magna on June 18.

Council leader, Cllr Roger Stone, said: “It’s a fantastic idea and it’s history in the making for Thrybergh School.

“One of their two torches will be kept in the museum to remind us that when the Olympic Torch came through Rotherham, Thrybergh created their own too.”
