Thousands of Rotherham single parents 'face losing money'

THOUSANDS of single parents in Rotherham could lose maintenance cash if changes to child support go ahead, a charity has warned.

Figures from the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission show up to 6,650 mums and dads could be affected if new charges are adopted.

Single parent charity Gingerbread has written to MPs to say many parents will either be unable to afford the proposed fees.

It also warns that they might not be able to rely on their ex-partners to pay up voluntarily.

Charity chief executive Fiona Weir said: “The Government wants parents to agree their own child maintenance arrangements instead of using the state scheme but that isn’t always possible, especially when there’s estrangement, conflict or a reluctance to pay.

“While Gingerbread is in favour of providing greater support to separating parents to help them co-operate over arrangements, imposing charges on those who can’t will only end up hurting children.”

The Welfare Reform Bill also includes measures which will prevent separated parents using the Child Support Agency unless they can show they have taken steps to negotiate a private arrangement with their ex.

Mrs Weir added: “The Government is creating an obstacle course for parents who need to use the statutory maintenance system which will create delay and hardship for many single parents and their children.

“Even small amounts of maintenance can help pay for shoes and clothes, a football class or a swimming lesson.”
