Speaking up on suicide as part of campaign

PUBLIC health staff will be at the Rotherham Show this weekend to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

They will advise people on the signs that someone is struggling with mental health and where to seek help.

Cllr David Roche, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for health, said: “The three words of the theme for this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day: connect, communicate, care are at the heart of suicide prevention.

“We want to stop suicide being a taboo subject and encourage people to talk about it.

“Reaching out to those who have become disconnected from others, talking and offering them support and friendship may be a lifesaving act.”

Tom Gray, who attempted suicide twice and now volunteers for Samaritans, said the campaign to get people talking was a fantastic idea for Rotherham.

He added: “I hope it will help to stop people going through what I went through.  If I had known that help was out there, I may have got help sooner and not taken the action I did.

“It is vitally important that those who are struggling with their mental health know that it is okay to talk and that they are not alone.

“Seeking help is the most difficult but important step, so hopefully this campaign will reach out to those who are in need.”

Businesses wishing to support the awareness campaign can call the council on 01709 255840 for posters to display.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, contact the Samaritans on 116 123 or the Rotherham Crisis helpline on 01709 302670.
