Smoke alarm saves four in house blaze

FOUR people escaped unharmed from a fire in their Rotherham home.

Two fire engines from Rotherham station attended a call from Wellgate just after 11pm, where three adults and a toddler had fled their burning end terrace house after being woken by their smoke alarm.

Firefighters tackled the blaze, thought to have started in a back bedroom when a lamp overheated, before clearing the property of smoke.

Rotherham station manager Jon Torn said: “As this incident proves, smoke alarms save lives. We are urging people to make sure that they have a working smoke alarm in their home.  By keeping smoke alarms in good working order it protects you and your family against fire.”

Elsewhere, one crew from Maltby fire station responded to a car set alight in a Westfield Road driveway at around 1.30am on Wednesday. The fire is thought to have been started deliberately.

Arsonists also set fire to a van in Cromwell Road, Mexborough, on Wednesday night.

Fire engines from Dearne station attended the blaze at around 10pm, but it had been extinguished by the time they arrived.

No-one was injured in the incident which, a fire service spokesman said, would be investigated by police.
