Shop workers join clean-up

STAFF from a High Street giant swapped the shopfloor for the canal towpath this week.

The staff from Marks and Spencer got down and dirty at the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal in Rotherham where they picked up litter.

They teamed up with the Canal and River Trust as part of the store’s Big Beach Clean-up which took place across the country last week (April 24-30).

The Big Beach Clean-up nationally aimed to tidy up 95 UK beaches and 45 canals.

Richard Parry, chief executive at the Canal & River Trust, said: “Our canals are a 200-year-old national treasure that are enjoyed by millions of people each year. “They need looking after, and litter and debris can be a real problem, polluting water, restricting use of the canals and towpaths, and harming wildlife.”
