Sefton scores with Euro 2016 app

A EURO-mad football fan has made his first foray into mobile software development with a sports-themed app.

Sefton Howie (25) of Clifton (pictured) published the Euro 2016 Challenge game on the Google Play apps marketplace.

It was downloaded 500 times in just one week, with players submitting rave reviews.

The app challenges users to play digital keepie-uppies on their tablet or smartphone.

Players can choose to represent any one of 32 Euros teams and share their top scores on Facebook and Twitter.

Self-confessed Rotherham United diehard Sefton, of Davis Street, is working at a call centre while studying for an Open University degree in computer science.

He said: "This is my first foray into developing apps and it proved very strenuous.

"I've single-handedly developed the game, while working full-time and doing a four-year degree.

"Most apps in the stores are crafted by large development teams, with huge marketing and advertising budgets.

"This one was created by me alone and on a shoestring - it isn't a world-beater, but I genuinely believe it's a good product with potential."

Sefton tested out early versions of the game on fellow volunteers at The Jungle refugee camp in Calais.

He said he hoped for a future in games design, with a team of programmers and digital artists.

"I would like to make a bigger app, like a role-playing game," he said, "but that would need a full team of people."
