RSPCA officers are hunting the owner of a dog that suffered deep wounds to its throat after it was left tied up with a length of washing line.

The young long-haired terrier has spent Christmas and new year in the safety of the charity's animal rescue centre, at Bawtry, after it was found wandering the streets of Mexborough with the cord still wrapped around its neck.

A horrified member of the public alerted the RSPCA to the stricken animal after spotting it on Harlington Road, Mexborough.

Now the animal welfare charity has launched an appeal to find the owners of the dog which staff at the Bawtry Animal Rescue Centre have already named Alvin, after the film Alvin and the Chipmunks.

RSPCA Inspector Damien Wooliscroft, who rescued Alvin, said: "It's an horrific cut around his neck and poor Alvin must have suffered terribly whilst trying to struggle free.

"I'd like to hear from anyone who may have seen him being tied up, or has any information about this incident to contact us on 0300 1234 999 and leave a message for me."
