Rotherham solar energy firm in green centre talks: VIDEO

ROTHERHAM-based solar power company WS Systems is in talks to create a renewable energy centre after unveiling one of the UK’s biggest solar panel set-ups.

The business is leading a £1 million project at the Magna science centre and hopes that it will be the catalyst to creating a green education and training centre.

More than 5,000 solar panels are being placed on the roof of the former steel works and the scheme is expected to save Magna £50,000 in electricity bills a year.

Munsborough-based WS Systems is now in talks with the board of directors at the attraction to put a joint bid in to the Regional Growth Fund to create a Green Innovation Centre at the site.

The centre would feature the latest renewable energy technology and, as well as acting as a research facility to create the products of tomorrow, it would provide education for school pupils and students as well as training adults for a career in the sector.

WS Systems commercial director Mark Ducker said that the company had secured the support of the Full Circle Learning facility in Rotherham and would hopefully soon secure the backing of Magna.

Mr Ducker said: “These plans will create a green technology centre that everyone can learn from.

“It will be a space for all ages, providing research, knowledge, education and qualifications.

“It will help businesses to develop green strategies and will help to create jobs locally by putting the region at the forefront of renewable energy research.

“There is a real skills gap in this sector and we will help people and businesses to get the training they need for the green jobs of the future.”
