Rotherham kids target for road safety campaign

ROAD safety campaigners are urging adults to teach good children road habits and help to prevent injury on South Yorkshire’s highways this Child Safety Week.

The Safer Roads Partnership, including police and fire service road safety experts, has published advice for parents and carers on how to avoid young pedestrians or passengers falling victim to traffic—which killed two children and injured 72 in the county last year.

Grown-ups are encouraged to lead by example—practising the Green Cross Code, wearing a seatbelt and using cycle helmets.

Partnership spokeswoman Karen Vickers: “Road safety is a really important topic for all parents and carers to talk about with their children throughout the year.

“Many people are shocked that internationally more young people are killed on roads than by any other means and it is clear that the more that children can reminded of the dangers, the safer they are likely to be as they grow up.”

She added: “As a parent or carer, you are your child's best teacher and I would ask you to talk regularly to your child about their safety when walking as a pedestrian or travelling by car.”

Child Safety Week starts on Monday and runs until Sunday. For more information visit www.childsafetyweek.org.uk.
