Rosy in the garden for Kimberworth school pupils

A SCHOOL is out to grow children’s gardening knowledge after receiving a welcome windfall.

Kelford School in Kimberworth has received funding from Wooden Spoon — the children’s charity of rugby — to create an outdoor learning space where pupils can learn horticulture regardless of the weather.

The money has been used to build an indoor-style classroom, a covered veranda for sheltered work, accessible grounds for children who use a wheelchair or walking aids, a storage space and a potting shed for students aged 14 to 19.

Kelford is a specialist school for children and young people with profound, severe and complex learning difficulties.

The school said the Horticulture Hub would help the young people gain a recognised qualification in horticulture.

School governor  Caroline Firth said: “Pupils already sell their produce to staff but we hope the new veranda will provide a base from which they can also gain customers in the community via a market-type stall.”
