Question mark over Rotherham town centre plans as Tesco puts superstores on ice

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco may be forced to rethink its plans for a huge new store in Rotherham.

The company’s chief executive, Philip Clarke, is expected to report later this week that all new plans for Tesco superstores are on hold following a fall in profits.

That would put under threat plans for a new Tesco Extra at the former Civic site at Walker Place, which are already the subject of a planning application.

Tesco is expected to close its exist Forge Island store, making way for a new Cultural Quarter, but the town centre revamp would be thrown into chaos if the superstore scheme hit the buffers.
