Pub evacuated due to shops blaze

A PUB was evacuated as firefighters tackled a blaze at nearby shops on Friday afternoon.

The alarm was raised shortly before 2pm and five engines were at Bank Street, Mexborough, during the height of the incident.

A fire service spokesman said: “The fire was in the roof space of two empty shops. We had to evacuate a pub close to the fire but no one has been hurt.”

Initial reports suggest the fire started accidentally, but a full fire cause investigation will take place once the fire is out.

The crews, from Dearne, Rotherham and Central stations, had the blaze under control by around 4pm.
