Probe into death after hospital sends Shannon home

AN investigation is being carried out into the death of a 16-year-old girl who collapsed suddenly at home and died hours later in hospital.

Shannon Deakin, a student at Swinton’s Dearne Valley College, collapsed in front of her parents after being sent home from Barnsley Hospital hours earlier with tablets for an infection.

She died early on December 4 from a pulmonary embolism, caused by a blood clot moving from her leg up to her chest, according to a post mortem.

NHS Barnsley confirmed than an investigation has been launched after a complaint by the family.

A spokesman said: “Our deepest condolences are with family and friends at this time.

“Working closely with our local health partners including Barnsley’s out-of-hours service provider, which is based at the hospital, we will undertake a full review of the circumstances leading to this tragic event.”

Shannon studied at Dearne Valley College from September on a health and social care course.

Students and college staff have paid tribute to the teenager who was described as a “princess.”

An inquest in Sheffield was opened and adjourned last week.
