Poseidon ruling the waves

NEW technology at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre is slashing the time taken to build huge parts like marine propellers.

A bespoke CMS Poseidon machine has been installed to create much bigger replica moulds for industries like aerospace, oil and gas.

The idea is to enable UK firms to produce titanium parts weighing up to 500kg — a market currently dominated by the US.

Richard Gould, from AMRC Castings, said: “Any UK company wanting to break into the market would have to develop the know-how themselves.

“But we aim to build up the know-how for the benefit of the UK advanced manufacturing and aerospace industries.”

The new machine will become even more useful when the biggest furnace for casting titanium plane parts is installed at AMRC Castings later this year.
