Students hold their own at leaders' debate

FIRST-TIME voters at a Rotherham sixth form hosted their own leaders’ debate ahead of this week’s General Election.

Students at Wales High School staged their own debate featuring representatives from the three main parties who were grilled in front of a live audience.

The aim of the event was to engage first time voters in the political process, encourage them to vote and help them to make an informed choice.

Dominic Beck, who was tasked with representing Labour, helped to organise the event.

He said: "It is important that first-time voters and young people generally engage in the political process and use their vote based on the informed decision.

“As someone who has seen first hand the difference that young people and Rotherham Borough Council can make working together, I want to try and involve as many young people in the democratic process as possible.

“As we get older, politics will hold more and more relevance in our lives so why not start early.

“Finally, it gave them a great chance to grill representatives from the main parties about contentious issues.”
