Socialist activists launch Rotherham branch

SOCIALIST activists are holding a public meeting in Rotherham to help launch a new branch of their party.

The Socialist Party, which used to be known as the Militant Tendency, says it aims to put socialism back on the agenda.

The meeting, at The Bridge pub, Chantrey Bridge, will be addressed by the party's general secretary Hannah Sell on the theme of “Capitalism doesn’t work, Hear the Case for Socialism”

New branch secretary Chris Bingham says "Rotherham has been devastated by massive job losses, and pays amongst the lowest wages in Yorkshire. And thats before this new Tory government gets to work with its attacks on the public sector. Why should ordinary folk pay the price for the economic devastation caused by greedy bankers and expenses rip-off MPs?"

South Yorkshire Socialist Party organiser Alistair Tice says “After the general election when voters rejected all 3 main parties, and with savage cuts due to be implemented by the new Tory/Lib coalition, many working class and young people are looking for a credible left-wing alternative to fight back against a capitalist system that bails out the bankers then attacks ordinary people who are already struggling to make ends meet."

"Due to the recent big increase in Socialist Party membership in Rotherham , we have decided to launch a new branch in the town which aims to put socialism back on the agenda – on the streets, in elections, in campaigns. We appeal to anyone interested in hearing the case for socialism to come along to our public launch meeting or contact Alistair Tice on 07706710041.”
