SHOPKEEPERS are being warned about selling alcohol to under 18s after a store manager was caught out.

Police officers carried out a test purchase operation at a Darfield store using a teenager working on behalf of the force.

The manager of the shop, Mandy Lane (52), of Nottingham Close, Barnsley, sold the underage teenager a quantity of alcohol.

She was convicted at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court and fined £75 and required to pay £50 costs.

PC Craig Sumpter said: “Let this message be clear to all shopkeeper and licensees, South Yorkshire Police will ensure compliance with the law.

“Licences to sell alcohol bring with them an important responsibility, namely not to sell alcohol to person under 18.

“Police in Darfield have worked hard at tackling anti-social behaviour fuelled by alcohol and we will maintain our vigilance.”

Lane has now resigned from her position as store manager.
