Racist stalker who used kitchen drawer to beat ex-partner jailed

A 23-year-old man who stalked, racially abused and beat his ex-partner with a kitchen drawer has been jailed.

Zubear Zaman, of Warwick Street, Moorgate, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday (August 11) and admitted to racially aggravated assault and stalking.

He was jailed for 15 months and sentenced to three months — to run concurrently — for breaching a suspended sentence handed to him last year.

The court heard how Zaman began stalking his victim in Rotherham from November 2014, and prior to that had been abusive towards her for more than a year.

Zaman sent threatening messages, phone calls and turned up at his victim’s Eastwood home.

On one occasion, Zaman turned up at her home on November 13 and was verbally and physically abusive.

He assaulted her in the kitchen and used a drawer to beat her while making derogatory racial comments.

Police arrested Zaman in December and he was bailed during the investigations.

But after continuing to harass his ex-partner he was arrested again in March and has been in custody since.

Investigating officer, Det Con Craig Hayward, said after the sentencing: “Zaman’s victim was subjected to verbal, physical and psychological abuse for over 12 months and the courage shown by her throughout this case is commendable.

“We remain absolutely committed to working alongside our partner agencies to support victims of domestic abuse.”

Zaman was also handed a five-year restraining order to prevent him from contacting his victim.
