Headbutt for good neighbour taxi driver leads to jail

A ROTHERHAM taxi driver who did a neighbour a favour was rewarded with a headbutt in the face, a court heard.

Cabbie Amin Khan gave a free lift to neighbour Carl Woolley and two others but realised his iPhone was missing after dropping off the passengers at Holywell Place in Rotherham town centre.

He went to Woolley’s house and spoke to one of the passengers, who denied taking the phone, Mr Peter Pimm, prosecuting, told Sheffield Crown Court.

Woolley (38) came to the door and “without warning” headbutted Mr Khan, who went to hospital with a suspected fractured nose.

Woolley, of Effingham Street, had a long criminal record with 26 convictions for 51 offences, mostly for shoplifting, the court heard.

He admitted assaulting Mr Khan causing actual bodily harm on August 6 last year.

Mr Dermot Hughes, for Woolley, said his behavioural problems stemmed from drug misuse and in the past he had benefitted from a drug rehabilitation order.

The defendant who appeared over a videolink from Doncaster Prison, told the court he had been offered help with accomodation and a detoxification course in Wales when he comes out of jail.

Judge Paul Watson said he would give Woolley a sentence which would lead to his early release on licence for 12 months.

He jailed him for a total of six months with the time he has spent on remand counting towards the sentence.
