X Factor star boosts Rotherham couple's charity ball

X FACTOR finalist Jamie Archer has helped a Rotherham couple add £40,000 to their fund-raising total for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Darren and Gail Baker raised the money with a charity ball at Magna and have now raised £190,000 for the charity since they began fund-raising in 2005 after the death of Darren’s dad John from stomach cancer.

The couple, who live in Bramley, were made patrons of the charity last year.

Darren, who was made a patron of the charity along with his wife last year, said: “It was a fantastic night!

“Jamie Archer was such a nice guy and a brilliant entertainer. After his performance he stuck around to have pictures taken and chat with the guests.

“The evening was a sell-out and everyone had a great time. We've already booked a date for next year’s ball and are going to get to work on securing another big name performer.

“Both me and Gail are really pleased to have had another successful event and to have raised more than £40,000 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity that will help to fund vital cancer research, treatment and care for patients.

“The care they give their patients at Weston Park Hospital is just incredible.”

Rachel Thorpe, charity director of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “It was yet another fabulous evening and we cannot thank Darren and Gail Baker enough for all their support each year and putting on such a stunning event.

“We need £1.3m a year to enable us to continue with our work and it is with the help of generous people like Darren and Gail that we can achieve this. We couldn't do it without support from the public.”
