Wife bids for Police Commissioner's old council seat

THE wife of police commissioner Shaun Wright is in the running to replace her husband on the council.

Lisa Wright has been chosen as the Labour candidate for Rawmarsh in the by-election triggered by Mr Wright’s resignation from Rotherham Borough Council last month.

Ms Wright (37), a nurse at Rotherham Hospital, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of three previous generations of her family.

Her great grand father Bill Skelton was elected to Rotherham Council in the 1940s and was Mayor in 1969; her grandmother Joan Johnston was elected in the 1960's and was Mayor in 1981 and her mother Lindsay Johnston was elected in the 1990s and currently represents Wingfield Ward.

Mrs Wright said: “I couldn't be more proud.

“I’ve been a member of the Labour Party all my adult life and supported my family in their roles as councillors, even delivering Labour leaflets as a little girl.

“I thought it was time I stood for council and I relish the opportunity to fight this election and, if successful, continue the excellent work of other family members in ensuring local residents get decent services.”

Bob Bird, chairman of Rawmarsh & Parkgate Labour Party said he was “delighted to have secured such a great local candidate in Lisa.”

The election will be held on May 16.
