Only 2% failing to cough up council tax in Rotherham

COUNCIL tax collection rates in Rotherham have risen for the third year running, according to Town Hall officials.

Rotherham Borough Council said that a total of 97.7 per cent of council tax across the borough was collected during 2011/12—up 0.3 per cent on the previous year.

The council’s director of financial services, Stuart Booth, described it as an excellent result for both the staff involved and the tax-paying public.

He added: “Our staff have worked very hard to get in as much council tax as possible because they know it makes it much fairer for all those who do pay.

“This is particularly relevant during the current economic climate when every bit of funding is vital to help the council to continue to provide excellent services to those residents most in need.

“Finally, the public should be assured that we will be taking further, positive steps to collect the outstanding debts.”
